This timber-framed garden enclosure was designed to keep the local deer population at bay. The terraced nature of this garden created an opportunity for the use of dynamic lines as a key design element. This gardening cottage incorporated a swept roofline, and prowed peak. Rough-cut board siding, and reclaimed Cedar roof shakes add to the rustic feel of this building. The strong lines of this door accentuate the symmetrical design of the building. Split-faced blocks on a concrete slab create a durable foundation. Exposed beams and rafters highlight the rustic, yet delicate design. In this “work in progress” photo the swept rafters are more visible, as are the prowed peak, and block foundation. This fence was designed to keep deer from entering the client’s yard, without having the appearance of a “livestock” fence. The design pattern was modeled after an existing pattern on the client’s house. Vertical grain Western Red Cedar was used to match. This extensive, enclosed garden project in Nantucket, MA was designed and built in several phases, over a period of two years. Timber framed arbors, raised garden beds, brick pathways, manicured lawns, and existing native trees were all incorporated into the design of this garden. An antique oxen yoke, obtained at a local estate sale, was used to decorate the entrance to the main portion of the garden. Brick pathways create a durable surface for high-traffic areas. This backyard entry incorporated a single, swinging gate to span a wide sidewalk. The arching curve, and picture-frame spy window, add visual interest, and break-up the large area of the gate.
