We designed, and built the remodel of this seaside shack in Nantucket, MA into a whimsical, children’s playhouse. Skewed angles, and inverted picket-fence boards point the way to a secret passage under the stairs. More creative angles were used to hide existing blemishes on the old structure. This creative carpentry was inspired by the rolling waves of the seaside environment outside this playhouse. A custom-painted door, new planter boxes, and a reclaimed rose trellis were added to the exterior. A decorative sign, created by a local artist, was added to the gable. A false cupboard door built from weathered materials masks existing utility pipes. A new back door, and stair landing were also added for safety. This is what it looked like before we started! We designed and built this tree house in Nantucket, MA independent of the trees, so that the trees would not be damaged by the structure. A “bird’s nest” deck is nestled carefully among the tree branches. Forced perspective was added to the stairs, and entry door, skewing the angles in order to give the illusion of greater height. The floppy curve of the roof was an added element of fun. More forced perspective was used inside the tree house, in order to make the room appear longer, and larger. The structural elements were left exposed to accentuate this perspective. This “bird’s nest” deck is big enough for parents to enjoy, while their children play.
